Home Who we are Getting Started FAQ

Two aspects of Emmaus Counseling Center which have contributed to its wide acceptance over the years have been first, our commitment to working with a person holistically (i.e. we keep in contact with each person's other health care practitioners, e.g. physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, school counselors, etc. each of whom are a primary referral source to Emmaus Counseling Center). For example, currently, over 250 family and pediatric physicians are on Emmaus' list of referring physicians.

And secondly, Emmaus' philosophy is one of paying close attention to a humanistic and systemic approach in treating each individual. And because each of us is unique, the therapists at Emmaus offer an exciting and varied approach with each new client. Different approaches include systems therapy, art therapy, rational-emotive therapy, behavioral therapy, and drama therapy for individuals, for couples, for families and for groups.

All the therapists at Emmaus Counseling Center are unique individuals and, therefore, have their own unique approaches to therapy. Everyone, however, shares the image of "walking with their clients," an image that comes from the word "Emmaus,"

Emmaus is the name of a town outside of Jerusalem. According to the story, after Jesus' crucifixion, two of his disciples were walking back home to the town of Emmaus. They were in deep anguish and pain which was alleviated by their being able to share their grief with a stranger who began to walk with them on the road. At Emmaus Counseling Center, patients who enter our doors with Christian values will find those values reinforced within their therapy, but those who are not looking for this reinforcement will find that these values are not imposed. Regardless, all who come to us will find a therapist who is respectfully willing to walk with their patients in their anguish and pain.
